Hydroelectric, Power & Water Systems

Thermal Power Plant Auxiliary Automation

Thermal power plants rely on a range of auxiliary systems in addition to primary boiler and turbine controls. Project-based PLC automation can coordinate non-safety-critical water treatment, cooling-water pumps, ash or material-handling conveyors, pump stations and equipment status, integrating with plant HMI/SCADA where the interfaces are defined. Automation scope depends on the equipment, operating sequence, existing controls and process requirements. Share the machine details and desired outcome to define a suitable control approach.

Auxiliary and primary-system boundaries

For each interface, document which controller owns a command, which system supplies permissives and how faults propagate to the plant operator. Auxiliary PLC changes should be planned around the existing DCS, package controllers and outage schedule. Boiler safety, burner-management and turbine protection logic remain in their designated systems.

Application overview

Thermal power plants rely on a range of auxiliary systems in addition to primary boiler and turbine controls. Project-based PLC automation can coordinate non-safety-critical water treatment, cooling-water pumps, ash or material-handling conveyors, pump stations and equipment status, integrating with plant HMI/SCADA where the interfaces are defined.

Typical requirements to define

  • Auxiliary system boundaries, process diagrams, equipment packages and plant operating procedures
  • Pump, fan, conveyor, valve and actuator details with starter/VFD and feedback signals
  • Available level, pressure, flow, temperature and equipment fault inputs
  • Permissives, interlocks, modes, alarms, startup/shutdown and recovery requirements
  • Existing plant PLC/DCS/SCADA interfaces, communication method and commissioning constraints

Example process sequence

  1. Confirm selected plant mode, equipment readiness and required permissives.
  2. Start auxiliary equipment in the approved order and verify run, valve or process feedback.
  3. Monitor configured process values, equipment status and communication health.
  4. On fault, inhibit dependent starts or stop affected equipment according to the documented sequence and raise an actionable alarm.
  5. Restore operation only after the prescribed inspection, acknowledgement and permissive checks.

Auxiliary equipment sequences

PLC logic may coordinate cooling-water pump groups, water-treatment steps, pump stations or ash/material conveyors according to their individual operating narratives. Interlocks should reflect downstream readiness and equipment package responsibilities.

HMI/SCADA and plant interfaces

Operator screens can show mode, sequence step, run/fault feedback, process signals and alarm status. Interface with plant DCS or SCADA depends on available gateways, tag lists and agreed command ownership.

Boiler and turbine protection boundary

A general-purpose PLC is not a replacement for boiler safety systems, burner-management systems, turbine protection or other dedicated safety/protection systems. Auxiliary control should integrate only within approved boundaries.

Frequently asked questions

Which thermal plant auxiliaries can be included?

Depending on project boundaries, work may cover water treatment, cooling-water pumps, pump stations, ash/material conveyors and non-safety-critical monitoring. The equipment list and interfaces determine the practical scope.

Can auxiliary PLCs share status with plant SCADA or DCS?

Yes, where a compatible communication interface or gateway and an agreed tag/command list are available. Network architecture and authority for operator commands must be reviewed.

Can a general PLC replace boiler or turbine safety controls?

No. Boiler safety, burner-management and turbine protection functions require their dedicated systems and engineering. This page covers auxiliary automation and integration only.
